Since 1927, Volvo has developed from a small local industry to one of the leading global suppliers of commercial transport and infrastructure solutions, providing products such as trucks, buses, construction equipment, and drive systems for marine and industrial applications.

The recipe behind our continuing success has stayed the same through the years: developing world class products and solutions to improve peoples' lives by making our world safer, fossil-free, and more productive.

In a rapidly changing world, Volvo Group has kept the course it set in the early days – keeping the wheels of society spinning, delivering the goods, services and capabilities for modern civilization to thrive.

Committed to sustainable progress

Volvo Group has set ambitious Science Based Targets (SBT) on greenhouse gas emission reductions in line with the Paris Agreement. Many of our customers, and their customers in turn, have also committed to sustainability goals, encouraging them to gradually phase-out vehicles and machines running on fossil fuels and replace them with electric vehicles. Because of this, we prioritize developing solutions that reduce carbon emissions. We are committed to our journey toward 100% fossil-free vehicles by 2040.

Electromobility as a solution

Electromobility is our baseline. It is one of three propulsion pathways chosen by Volvo Group as solutions for a more sustainable world. The others are hydrogen fuel cells and renewable combustion fuels, such as HVO, and hydrogen gas.

We continue to innovate and explore new solutions to old problems. We see battery electric propulsion systems as a vital part of the solution to greenhouse gas emissions and we were one of the first OEMs to produce and sell battery electric products:

  • We launched our first electric bus into service on the streets of Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2015.
  • Our first fully electric truck was launched in 2018. Since then, they have driven more than 80 million kilometers in service around the world.
  • The first electric construction machines from Volvo Group were launched in 2019. There is now a full range of electric machines available with supporting power units.

Digital services

Leading the transition to fossil-free transportation, our goal is to make a real and significant impact by supporting our customers’ efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Apart from our growing range of battery electric products, Volvo Group has invested heavily in developing digital services and solutions that further enhance the benefits of zero-emission transport. Utilizing intelligent routing, loading and charging solutions, Volvo Group helps to increase vehicle uptime and ensure fleets are used optimally.

Autonomous operation

In a similar manner, our autonomous drive technologies are being designed with sustainability, safety and productivity in mind. Examples include mines, quarries, and industrial material handling where flows are repetitive and controlled, semi-confined areas such as ports and logistics centers, and hub-to-hub long haul truck transport pilots that are currently underway around the globe.

Total solutions

As a manufacturer of trucks, buses, construction equipment and marine and industrial power solutions, along with our autonomous operations and power supply units, Volvo Group is well-positioned as a total solutions provider across the transport, mobility and infrastructure industries when it comes to zero-emission solutions.
